Recognized for their Creative Achievement

The Rhode Island Art Education Association has announced the recipients of the 2012 Scholastic Art Awards for Rhode Island, and seven Mt. Hope High School artists have won Gold Key and Silver Key awards for their artworks!  The Gold Key Award represents the highest level of achievement at the regional level and all Gold Key Award recipients are considered for recognition at the national competition.  The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is an annual competition and the longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative young people in the country.  Since 1923 the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have encouraged, recognized, and rewarded the creative achievement of young artists in grades 7 through 12.  Past winners include Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates.

This year’s RI Scholastic Art Awards recipients from MHHS are:

Nick Andreadis, Gold Key for his Mixed Media piece, “Look Through Me” (and Nick also won a Portfolio award);                                                                                         Maddie Dennis, Gold Key for her Comic Art, “Cyclodrama”;                                         Tyler Murgo, Gold Key for his film, “Recipe-X”;                                                                 Keely Varada, Gold Key for her photograph, “To Be”;                                                       Nicole Delekta, Silver Key for her photograph,”The Storm Passes”;                            Brooke Pacheco, 2 Silver Keys for ceramics pieces, “Hand and Twig” and “Hand and Shell”;                                                                                                                                         Alyssa Stuart, Silver Key for her painting “Self Portrait”

Congratulations, artists!  And thank you, MHHS art teacher Lauren Enjeti, for sharing the good news with The Arts Room!  The student work will be on display at the Hamilton Gallery at Salve Regina University from Tuesday, January 17th ’til Sunday, February 5th during regular gallery hours. Students will receive their awards at the official awards ceremony on Sunday, January 22nd at Salve Regina University.
